The documentary “I am a Promise: The Children of Stanton Elementary School” about an inner-city school in Philadelphia seemingly aims to target a viewer’s emotions, which was evidenced by the emphasis on facial reactions and following the most dramatic cases occurring in the school. This school was clearly different to schools in which I have taught as well as the ones I have attended. By looking at the behavior of the children as a whole, we see that neither the school nor the children is at fault. When juxtaposed to other children their age, rather, their home life is to blame, which most viewers do not see. This is fundamental to the understanding of the film because it ultimately shows that the documentary itself is misleading. It only portrays the school as a low-income, public school in need of government assistance, which is, to an extent, quite inaccurate.
